Casual Recreation Counselor CSW-Rec
Job Contribution:
The Recreation Counsellor provides opportunities for children to have fun and make friends by participating in community based activities. They promote inclusion by developing programs that are responsive to personal choices always offering a wide variety of typical recreation options. A personalized complement of recreational, social, and educational opportunities is scheduled and carried out in response to the wishes and needs of each individual and his or her family. The Recreation Counsellor teaches skill pertinent to the expressed interests and goals of each individual. The Counsellor assists children to balance safety with opportunity and risk taking. They establish and maintain supportive, respectful, and personal relationship with each child or youth participating in the program and encourage the active involvement of family members and friends in each persons life. The Recreation Counsellor promotes the value, importance and need for diversity and inclusion within the whole community and therefore uses natural opportunities to educate through dialogue and modeling. The Recreation Counsellor is a dedicated and knowledgeable member of an organization wide support team.
Education:
· A grade 12-education and post secondary degree of diploma in a child related field, recreation, or community development is also required.
Experience:
· One-year experience supporting children in group settings is required.
Knowledge and Skills:
· Excellent oral and written communication skills; · Proven ability to provide assistance in emergencies, including crisis prevention skills; interpret human behaviour accurately and respond supportively; · Good organizational and time management skills; · Knowledge of theory, principles and practices of the community living sector; · Understanding of inclusion and an ability to develop meaningful relationships between children with special needs and other community members; · Ability to work with minimal supervision and to maintain professional conduct and objectivity at all times; · Proven ability to provide assistance in emergencies and ; · Demonstrated ability to teach skills and work effectively with others.
Additional Information and Requirements:
· Approved Criminal Record Search; · Doctors Note stating you are physically and mentally able to work with people with developmental disabilities; · Negative TB test; · Current (and approved) First Aid and CPR Certificate; · Valid Drivers Licence (Class 4) and; · Flexibility in schedules required.
