Family Support

The Family Support Program provides information, resources, and/or support to family members who face the extraordinary circumstances that come with having a family member who has a disability.

R.S.C.L. has a part-time Family Resource Coordinator on staff. Examples of when a family member or any interested individual may want to contact the Family Resource Coordinator are:

  • when a person would like more information about supports and services available locally or provincially

  • during a transition in a child's life - for example, the transition from preschool to Kindergarten, from elementary school to high school, leaving high school, moving from home, etc..

  • for family to family networking opportunities

  • when a family would like information and/or support accessing services for their family member

  • when a family member has information they would like to share with others

  • when someone has a suggestion for a training information session.

The Family Resource Coordinator also compiles and distributes a monthly newsletter called the "R.S.C.L. Family News" to those families who have a son or daughter participating in any of our services or programs.  This newsletter contains current information of interest to families who have children of all ages.

Other roles the Family Resource Coordinator can play:

  • Participation on committees to increase awareness and remain current regarding issues faced by people with developmental disabilities and their families.

  • Involvement in community development by working together with other community agencies to increase capacity to be inclusive of all people

  • Working in consultation to increase employee's understanding regarding supporting families

  • Providing access to resources such as books, videos, articles, etc.
